Now, here's a show that's unique. Directing movies is definitely a skill that I feel is a little more difficult to attain than others. There are a lot of things involved in creating a good movie. You need a good script, set of characters and actors. You need to have good, quality equipment, and the ability to utilize this equipment properly. Once shot, the film has to be edited, and possibly treated with filters. I have a lot of respect for people who create movies, shorts, and anything to do with visual media.
Now, I'm not the kind of guy that goes to every movie, watches eight hours of movies on a Saturday, or watches a movie seventeen times because I really liked it. I will probably watch any given movie once, and perhaps a second time if I really liked it, but it will take a few months or more before I get to that point. Most of the time when I watch a movie, I feel like I want a refund on the two hours I spent watching.
I guess that my point here is that I'm not your hardcore movie guy, but I do enjoy kicking back with a good flick once-in-a-while.
This On The Lot, however, got me from the beginning. I think it's cool to see amateur film makers strutting their stuff, and competing for the "big prize" with Spielberg. How much fun will that be?
It's getting to be pretty tense, and tight with the remaining film makers. They're all very good, and they're all very talented. Last night's show proved that. The idea was to create a short based on the phrase, "When Two Worlds Collide". The catch is that two people are going to be eliminated next week. Boy, that's going to be a tough call.
- Adam - Worldly Possessions: This was cool. I think the fact that he used "reality" in creating his special effects, rather than resorting to CGI or othe rmeans really shows something. The story was good, though I have to agree with the Judges when they said they weren't really sure why the box was sent to these people. I would think that some explanation of this may have told a little better story. Perhaps the guy that smudged the address label was a gremlin, or that this was some sort of "sign" to the couple. All-in-all, I enjoyed this, and I really hope that Adam stays in the competition. He's been consistent throughout.
- Hilary - The Legend of Donkey-Tail Willie: Now, Hilary hasn't really been my favorite for most of this show. She's just "okay". I like her directing, but the stories have been pretty bland. This, however, was fun. I really liked the narration and the way the film was shot. The story was cute, and the characters were interesting. I think she could have spiced it up by introducing the town as a town of oddballs or freaks that have been exiled from the mainstream. That's basically what the town was, but I thought that could have been emphasized in the narration. I don't think this is going to be good enough to keep her in, though. Her past performance is probably going to affect her.
- Shalini - First Sight: I'll have to ditto most of what I said about Hilary here for Shalini, except I think Shalini has better ideas than Hilary. This film was a real lesson in morality. Garry Marshall liked it, but Carrie Fisher thought it was too preachy. I liked it, and I thought that it was well-done. I do, however, think that this is not enough to keep her around. If you take her past performance into consideration, she will likely be one of the ones gone next week.
- Will - Spaghetti: Will has been pretty good during this competition, and I think he has a lot of interesting and fun ideas. This was one of them. I like the twist on the Spaghetti Western. The only thing it lacked was a soundtrack by Ennio Marconi. I will say that the ending lacked a little oomph, but the concept was great, and it was shot well. As the Judges said, it was nice to see a film from him with some dialogue in it. I don't think Will's going anywhere.
- Zach - Time Upon A Once: Two words: Zach Will Win This! Okay, that's four words. Zach is The Man. He's got killer effects chops, great visuals, excellent storytelling. He's got great ideas for his films, and he is consistent. The only place Zach is going to go in this competition is up. There's no way in Hell that he's not going to win this. If Zach doesn't win this competition, I'm boycotting this show forever. There hasn't been anyone other than him that has really shown excellence. There are some good film makers on the show, but Zach is the only truly great one.
